Eleven in the evening is an ordinary start and half past four an ordinary finish, and at twenty-eight most of her week is built that way. The streets south of the museums go quiet before the rest of the city does, so the journey tends to begin in a sleeping district and end in a room that is still lit. English is the only language on offer, which suits a guest with no energy left for a second one. An hour is 180 euros, and she will say plainly that ninety minutes does more with the same night.
